The BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico essay. This report discusses the issue of rice, concern because an oil spill is considered to be a disaster for both for human beings and the environment. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is no exception. The oil spill affected both human beings and the environment, polluting and damaging vast areas of the diamond concept for interior adjacent territories and the large populations of wildlife. The BP oil spill caused a serious damage not only to the marine life, but also to the human factor, including wild inhabitants, fishing and tourism industry in the Gulf of Mexico (Tangley, 2010). A large number of factors, including Petroleum toxicity, Corexit dispersant usage and oxygen depletion can be viewed as the major causes of the essay disaster which led to the negative impact on life insurance ecological system (Smithsona Venette, 2013). In this paper, the rice major risk management issues, which illustrate the case, are identified. Among these risk management issues are slow response to previous papers, the crisis, as the oil spill took several weeks to rice essay, stop.
The results of risk management assessment demonstrate that loss prevention measures in the case of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in first year previous 2010 were in place to prevent the oil spillage starting and the proper cost containment steps were taken to manage the cost of the required clean-up operations, recovery procedures to rice, promote business continuation, many days had been lost. Second, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrated poor governance of organization as the intermediate previous papers company lacked the effective crisis plan. Thus, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico case can be used to teach people lesson how to effectively use risk management and crisis management practices in addressing unexpected disasters. To manage the essay crisis, a special plan should be developed and tested. Any company should six stages of crisis management to remain successful on the competitive market. The company’s leaders should demonstrate their remarkable leadership capabilities, serving their companies, employees and communities. The Gulf of Mexico is one of the most valuable territories because of the availability of the great variety of marine life, including fish, shrimp and other species. The coasts of the Gulf of Mexico are the diamond best place for seabirds’ nests and turtles’ nesting.
However, the most valuable treasure for economic development of the country is the richest reserve of oil and natural gas. In general, there are more than 4,000 offshore rigs in the Gulf of essay, Mexico designed for drilling gas and oil (Chiang et al., 2010). Allowing Cell Phones? According to researchers, “many people who live in the five U.S. states that border the Gulf of Mexico (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida) depend on the Gulf for jobs and survival”(Chiang et al., 2010, p. 5). One more important function of the Gulf of Mexico is the growing fishing industry that provides over 1.3 pounds of fish and shellfish each year. This information helps to better understand the negative consequences of the BP oil spill in essay the Gulf of Mexico that occurred on April 20, 2010. The negative effects from oil spill have been widely discussed in common application scientific literature. These effects include species-specific effects, effects on the near shore environment, serious trophic effects through oil contamination of sediments, various site-specific effects, and the effects on drilling discharges (Lin Mendelssohn, 2012). Based on recent research findings, “the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that followed the explosion of the exploration platform Deepwater Horizon on rice 20 April 2010 was the largest accidental oil spill” in America that requires finding the sigma metathesis proper solutions to develop effective risk management practices. It is very important to find out “if an accident of this size could have been expected” (Acton, 2013, p. 501). The general aims of the analysis presented in this paper include:
providing an overview of the key facts surrounding the essay case identification of the major risk management issues identified in the case Comparing and contrast the way in us college application essay which these three risk management issues were dealt with by essay, the firm(s) involved with material presented in the course or other reference material dealing with the concepts or issues that the case illustrates Assessment of the effectiveness with which the crisis, created as a result of the failures in risk management evident in the case, were managed Identification of the lessons that can be learned from the coping and anxiety case, providing conclusions and the nature of any control procedures and/or risk treatment systems that should have been implemented or where failures occurred. This report is significant for assessment of the rice key risk management issues that are associated with the oil spill in life insurance the Gulf of Mexico. The BP’s handling of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010 teaches people some important crisis management lessons. Actually, the essay work on oil platforms is automated, but human errors often occur on with and anxiety these structures (Smithsona Venette, 2013). According to researchers, these oil drilling rigs are considered to rice essay, be the largest movable human-made structures in the world, as such “they have become virtual cities afloat that will always have minor equipment failure and human error, not to mention working in hurricane-prone environments” (Ostrom Wilhelmsen, 2012, p. 23). The Deepwater Horizon platform is no exception, as it has a long history of oil spillages and fires that occurred before the life insurance oil spillage of essay, 2010.
The Deepwater platform operates day and year previous question, night; therefore, some problems with equipment may appear on a regular basis. This report is aimed at rice giving explanation of common, some important risk management practices that should be taken into consideration by other companies to rice, avoid negative consequences, similar to the Deepwater Horizon platform’s disaster. Case Study Description of the key facts surrounding the case. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is considered to be the “largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of petroleum industry, being 8%-31% larger in volume that the previous largest oil spill, the Ixtos I oil spill” (Holland Schemwell, 2014, p. 23). The BP oil disaster is often called the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It occurred on 20 April 2010 in intermediate first year previous the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. Actually, the BP oil spill can be viewed as the worst environmental disaster in America.
The BP oil spill occurred near Mississippi River Delta, as a result of a deep-sea floor oil gusher, which was made by the massive explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform, one of the rice most efficient and effective semi-submersible drilling rigs in coping depression the Gulf of Mexico. It has been found that oil slick coverage was approximately 2,500 square miles in rice the Gulf of Mexico region. It has been reported that there were huge underwater oil plumes invisible at the surface. As a result of the massive explosion, there were many victims of this disaster; including 11 workers killed during the explosion and 17 men seriously injured (Holland Schemwell, 2014). On the allowing phones in school 15th of July, 2010, the rice gushing wellhead was capped, but the Deepwater Horizon platform released over 4.9 million barrels or 780,000 m3 of concept, crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico (Griggs, 2011). This fact means that as a result of the explosion, over 53,000 barrels of oil were spilled each day of the accident (from July 10 till July 15) before the workers could cap the essay well. The experts state that for 87 days, the oil continued to flow to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, causing serious damage to the environment and local economy. In other words, crude oil was flowing into the estuaries, marshes and beaches of three states affected by the spillage – Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi (Griggs, 2011).
The U.S. government declared that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico can be regarded as a national disaster. As a rule, an area contaminated by oil, is closely connected with the whole character of the affected environment. The free spilling of oil leads to a wide range of negative consequences, including “the spread by wind and wave” (Bai Bai, 2014, p. 363). The oil spillage from the Deepwater Horizon platform floating on the surface could evaporate through air and sun, spreading over the water surface. As a result, oil spillage affected the environment, including the wildlife.
Identification of diamond, three major risk management issues illustrated by the case. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in 2010 gives an essay opportunity to intermediate previous question, identify three major risk management issues, which can be assessed by experts as significant risk management lessons. One of the key risk management issues is that “the oil spill took some weeks to stop” (Hopkin, 2012, p. 175). Rice Essay? Although the results of risk management assessment show that loss prevention measures in the case of the BP oil spill were in place to prevent the oil spillage starting and intermediate first year question papers, the proper cost containment steps were taken to manage the cost of the required clean-up operations, recovery procedures to promote business continuation, much time had been lost. According to Paul Hopkin (2012), “it is, perhaps, the case that the damage limitation measures were not as robust as may have been required”(p. 175). Besides, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has raised serious risk management issues regarding the governance of rice, organization involved in the case. Risk management and governance in the BP organization are separate activities, which have their own committees and organize their own processes to achieve the established goals.
According to researchers, “the BP oil spill disaster has clearly shown that the us college common essay board has to own both the general governance of the organization and its many and varied risk activities” (Wright et al., 2013, p. 16). As a result, the disaster created an enormous financial crisis, leading to poor reputation of the BP organization. According to Otto Lerbinger (2012), “its image as a leader in deep sea technology was shattered, as well as its professed dedication to corporate social responsibility and the environment”(p. 24). Now the organization needs to use the proper strategies aimed at restoring its reputation in order to successfully operate in the Gulf of Mexico.
Based on the US federal government report that was issued in 2011 after investigation of the key causes of the disaster, the following failures were identified: Poor risk management practices Last-minute changes in rice essay decision making (Anastas et al., 2010) Failure to adequately observe and effectively respond to life insurance, critical indicators that were identified on the platform Inadequate and insufficient well control response “Insufficient emergency bridge response training by employees responsible” (Guinness Walpole, 2012, p. 227). Comparing and contrast the way in which these three risk management issues were dealt with by the firm(s) involved with material presented in the course or other reference material dealing with the concepts or issues that the case illustrates. In the case discussed in this paper, the BP failed to avoid certain management errors that led to rice essay, massive damage to the environment and caused considerable harm to previous, people. The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform rig can be viewed as an example of “a designation that is essay, a prevailing contention of government and intermediate first papers, other reports on the disaster” (Lerbinger, 2012, p. 24). The disaster in rice essay the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in coping with and anxiety 2010 was caused by certain management failures both by the organization (the BP Company) and its contractors (Transocean and Halliburton). Risk management practices were influenced by the wrong decision making associated with some technological problems. According to rice essay, the material presented in the course lectures, the risk management cycle involves several stages, which help an organization to manage risks: Identification, Quantification, Risk assessment, Risk treatment, Monitoring, Risk context.
These stages are interrelated (Business Risk Management Week 2, 2014, p. Concept For Interior? 2). Based on the established components of risk management process, it is possible to avoid negative consequences of rice essay, disasters in all spheres of human activity, including oil and gas industry. Allowing Cell Phones? In the Deepwater Horizon platform, many events led to the disaster because inadequate risk management practices were ineffective in that situation. In the case of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, “the behaviors and attitudes of leaders have been disappointing at best and irresponsible at worst” (Corkindale, 2010, p.1). In this crisis, some leadership skills have been misunderstood by the key players. The BP are responsible for rice essay, the environmental disaster, but the life insurance BP CEO Tony Hayward demonstrated some failures in leadership practices, providing control over the “organizational culture that sanctioned extreme risk-taking, ignored expert advice, overlooked warnings about safety issues and hid facts” (Corkindale, 2010, p.1).
The BP leaders failed to respond to the disaster with sufficient speed and essay, attention. Actually, this failure was a result of the inconsistent organizational culture. Assessment of the effectiveness with which the crisis, created as a result of the failures in risk management evident in the case, was managed. The effectiveness with which the crisis of the Deepwater Horizon platform, created as a result of the failures in risk management is evident in this case. There are six stages of crisis management, including “avoiding the crisis, preparing to manage the crisis, recognizing the crisis, containing the crisis, resolving the crisis and profiting from the common crisis” (Business Risk Management Week 3, 2014, p. 1). The Deepwater Horizon platform’s governance did not include all the above mentioned stages in its crisis management. In the Deepwater Horizon platform, there were serious problems with governance as the Company failed to rice essay, examine all possible scenarios, assess all possible consequences and identify the cost of prevention of us college common, these negative consequences. The response to the crisis was not planned in a proper way.
This fact means the rice BP Company failed to use the common application essay appropriate strategies to avoid the crisis. Because of the essay explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling platform, over 5 million barrels of oil were sent into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This fact proves that the bond metathesis lanthanides company failed to rice, avoid the crisis. According to allowing cell in school, researchers, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is an example of rice essay, a “company without crisis planning” (Cox, 2012, p. 87). The BP disaster was an unexpected event, which required the implementation of the us college effective crisis planning. According to Charles E. Cox (2012), “BP’s advantage was that, even without a crisis plan, the company had billions of dollars in the bank and enough cash reserves to rice, manage its way through the crisis and take steps to rebuild its reputation” (p. 88). Allowing Phones In School? Undoubtedly, the rice impact of the BP disaster was enormous because of the lack of the crisis planning.
Nevertheless, the BP governance managed to take some reasonably decisive action, using the first year previous question papers media and rice, public relations to address the issue of concern and demonstrate the company’s response to the disaster. The team to respond to the crisis was formed, but there were some failures as well. Mishandled communication influences the company’s response and the company’s reputation. The BP hired 2500 people on order to organize and conduct cleaning efforts in the states: Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida (Anastas et al., 2010). As a result, the company was judged by concept, the success the rice essay BP had in dealing with this disaster. Depression And Anxiety? The company employed many people to collect oil and protect the shore line from pollution. Essay? This strategy to us college application essay, address the crisis was effective only when sea was calm (Pennington-Gray et al., 2012). Thus, it is necessary to conclude that pollution from the activities of offshore companies leads to degradation of the essay marine environment. In those regions where major disasters take place, pollution can lead to the most devastating consequences both on the environment and human beings.
The Deepwater Horizon disaster is one of the examples that can be used to diamond, teach some lessons. Rice Essay? The key lessons that can be learned from the first previous question case are connected with risk management practices. The Deepwater Platform was operating under the BP contract (British Petroleum, the well-known multinational corporation headquartered in essay the UK). With? The discharge of oil had negative impact on the region, caused serious damage to fisheries and essay, marine habitants, bringing to phones in school essay, light the risks of deep water oil and gas drilling. The lessons that can be learned from the case give an opportunity to other companies to avoid negative consequences of the crisis and develop, maintain and implement effective crisis management practices.
One of the rice most important strategies to manage crisis is to implement a well-developed crisis plan, provide effective control procedures and risk treatment systems that must be developed and implemented in the areas, where failures occur frequently. In addition, the company’s leaders should demonstrate their remarkable leadership capabilities, serving their companies, employees and communities.

1000 great essays The remainder of this essay writing tutorial is rice essay, based on a short sample #039;divorce essay#039; (about 1,000 words). To complete all of the associated tasks, it is easiest if you have the sample essay in front of you. A major change that has occurred in us college application essay the Western family is an rice essay, increased incidence in divorce. Whereas in the past, divorce was a relatively rare occurrence, in recent times it has become quite commonplace. This change is borne out clearly in census figures. Intermediate First Previous Question? For example thirty years ago in Australia, only one marriage in ten ended in divorce; nowadays the figure is more than one in three (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1996: p.45). A consequence of rice this change has been a substantial increase in the number of single parent families and the attendant problems that this brings (Kilmartin, 1997). Diamond? An important issue for sociologists, and indeed for all of society, is rice, why these changes in marital patterns have occurred. In this essay I will seek to critically examine a number of sociological explanations for the #039;divorce phenomenon#039; and also consider the social policy implications that each explanation carries with it. It will be argued that the best explanations are to be found within a broad socio-economic framework.
One type of explanation for rising divorce has focused on changes in laws relating to diamond, marriage. For example, Bilton, Bonnett and Jones (1987) argue that increased rates of divorce do not necessarily indicate that families are now more unstable. It is possible, they claim, that there has always been a degree of marital instability. They suggest that changes in essay the law have been significant, because they have provided unhappily married couples with #039;access to a legal solution to pre-existent marital problems#039; (p.301). Intermediate First Year Previous? Bilton et al. therefore believe that changes in rice divorce rates can be best explained in terms of changes in the legal system. The problem with this type of explanation however, is application essay, that it does not consider why these laws have changed in the first place. It could be argued that reforms to family law, as well as the increased rate of rice essay divorce that has accompanied them, are the product of more fundamental changes in society. Another type of explanation is one that focuses precisely on these broad societal changes. For example, Nicky Hart (cited in Haralambos, 1995) argues that increases in divorce and marital breakdown are the result of economic changes that have affected the family. One example of these changes is the raised material aspirations of families, which Hart suggests has put pressure on both spouses to become wage earners. Women as a result have been forced to with, become both homemakers and economic providers.
According to Hart, the contradiction of these two roles has lead to conflict and this is the main cause of marital breakdown. It would appear that Hart#039;s explanation cannot account for all cases of divorce - for example, marital breakdown is liable to rice essay, occur in families where only the concept husband is working. Nevertheless, her approach, which is to essay, relate changes in family relations to broader social forces, would seem to be more probing than one that looks only at legislative change. The two explanations described above have very different implications for social policy, especially in application essay relation to how the problem of increasing marital instability might be dealt with. Bilton et al. (1995) offer a legal explanation and hence would see the solutions also being determined in this domain. If rises in essay divorce are thought to be the consequence of liberal divorce laws, the obvious way to stem this rise is to make them less obtainable. This approach, one imagines, would lead to a reduction in divorce statistics; however, it cannot really be held up as a genuine solution to the problems of marital stress and previous question breakdown in society.
Indeed it would seem to be a solution directed more at symptoms than addressing fundamental causes. Furthermore, the experience of rice social workers, working in the area of first year question papers family welfare suggests that restricting a couple#039;s access to divorce would in some cases serve only to exacerbate existing marital problems (Johnson, 1981). In those cases where violence is involved, the rice essay consequences could be tragic. Apart from all this, returning to more restrictive divorce laws seems to be a solution little favoured by Australians. (Harrison, 1990). Hart (cited in Haralambos, 1995), writing from a Marxist-feminist position, traces marital conflict to changes in life insurance the capitalist economic system and their resultant effect on the roles of men and essay women.
It is difficult to know however, how such an analysis might be translated into practical social policies. This is because the Hart program would appear to require in the first place a radical restructuring of the economic system. Whilst this may be desirable for some, it is not achievable in the present political climate. Hart is sigma bond, right however, to suggest that much marital conflict can be linked in some way to rice, the economic circumstances of families. This is borne out in many statistical surveys which show consistently that rates of divorce are higher among socially disadvantaged families (McDonald, 1993). Allowing In School Essay? This situation suggests then that social policies need to be geared to providing support and security for these types of families. Rice? It is little cause for optimism however, that in recent years governments of in school essay all persuasions have shown an increasing reluctance to fund social welfare programs of essay this kind. It is difficult to offer a comprehensive explanation for the growing trend of sigma metathesis marital breakdown; and it is even more difficult to find solutions that might ameliorate the problems created by it.
Clearly though, as I have argued in this essay, the most useful answers are to rice, be found not within a narrow legal framework, but within a broader socio-economic one. Finally, it is worth pointing out that, whilst we may appear to be living in a time of increased family instability, research suggests that historically, instability may have been the norm rather than the exception. As Bell and Zajdow (1997) point out, in the past, single parent and step families were more common than is assumed - although the disruptive influence then was not divorce, but the premature death of one or both parents. This situation suggests that in studying the modern family, one needs to employ a historical perspective, including the possibility of looking to the past in searching for ways of dealing with problems in the present. So you need to be okay with that fact and just get through it. Set a word count goal for essay, every day, and and anxiety every week. Rice Essay? A final novel is about 70,000-100,000 words so keep that in mind! It’s a marathon. Case Study: BP Texas Refinery Essay. According to Lewicki, Saunders Minton (2003), adopting an unethical approach to negotiation in business can have serious consequences. A recent explosion at the British Petroleum (BP) Texas refinery on 24 March, 2005 reiterated this and demonstrated the effect of an unethical approach to negotiation with the death of 15 contract workers. Ethical behaviour refers to the standards of conduct such as honesty, fairness, responsibility and rice essay, trust. (Lewicki et al 2003) These standards are broadly applied and determine whether a course of action is right or wrong in a given situation. (Lewicki et al 2003) According to Es (1955), advocates of the us college essay ‘absolutist’ position hold a rigid view of essay what is right and wrong. In contrast, a ‘relativist’ approach would suggest ethical behaviour be contingent in phones nature, therefore having no set definition of what is essay, right and wrong. History is fraught with examples of unethical behaviour, from Nazi Germany of 1945 to diamond concept for interior, recent atrocities in the Balkans and Rwanda. However, in those instances there was no negotiation involved.
There are also numerous examples of unethical behaviour adopted in negotiation that have occurred in modern society. These have ranged from large scale unethical business issues such as the recent BP Texas refinery’s failure on rice, safety provisions; Patrick’s wharf workers incident and the Hardie’s asbestos compensation dispute; to smaller everyday unscrupulous business dealings. Research into ethics and negotiation is primarily focused towards examining the standard of truth. (Lewicki et al 2003) Attempting to define ‘truth’ raises a number of controversial issues. For example, ‘what constitutes a lie?’ and ‘are there situations where not telling the truth may be considered acceptable, or even necessary?’ (Lewicki et al 2003: pp.167) The inherent competitive nature of most negotiating situations would suggest a certain degree of deceptive behaviour was a necessary component of diamond for interior negotiating. (Friedman Shapiro 1995) Thus ethical negotiation becomes a question of distinguishing those behaviours which are deemed acceptable from those which are unacceptable. Essay! Negotiators need to be aware of the common implications of rice essay their behaviour as failure to adhere to established ethical conventions may ultimately result in undesirable consequences. (Es, 1955) Ethics in Negotiation.
Given that information is a major source of power in negotiation it is bond metathesis, not difficult to understand why negotiators may be attracted to deceptive behaviours. Rice Essay! Ultimately the party who acquires information of the diamond concept for interior highest quality or uses it more persuasively will have a significant advantage over essay their opponent. (Lewicki et al 2003) By engaging in deceptive behaviour negotiators can manipulate information to the advantage of their own self-interest. (Es, 1955) For example negotiators often present inaccurate or misleading information in an attempt to alter their opponent’s perceptions, preferences and priorities. (Lewicki et. al. 2003) Other examples of deceptive behaviour include: bluffing, exaggerations and concealment. Lack of responsibility for us college common essay, ones actions is a significant concern with respect to unethical behaviour in negotiations. (Byrnes, 1987) It is quite often the case that negotiators will attempt to justify their use of unethical behaviour by shifting the focus to the other party. For example a negotiator may perceive the other side to rice essay, have adopted a competitive approach, therefore the use of unethical tactics is life insurance, justified in their minds as a necessary defence mechanism. Essay! Other self-serving rationalisations include: the belief that the end justifies the means, it was unavoidable and the behaviour was appropriate to the situation. With! (Lewicki et. al. 2003) Given the fact that most negotiations tend to incorporate elements of distributive bargaining it is generally accepted that some information will be concealed and exaggerated offers made. (Friedman Shapiro 1995) Even the most cooperative of negotiators will be reluctant to facilitate a completely trusting and rice essay, honest negotiating environment. Negotiators need to find a suitable medium which communicates their integrity while maintaining a safe bargaining position. (Byrnes, 1987) The amount of information the parties are required to disclose will be contingent upon the situation. Unethical behaviour in negotiations can lead to both positive and and anxiety, negative outcomes. Rice! (Lewicki et. Diamond Concept For Interior! al., 2003) However, incentives for rice, deception often create a serious moral tension resulting in unethical negotiators displaying signs of post negotiation guilt and discomfort. (Byrnes, 1987) By failing to adhere to established ethical conventions in negotiations, a party may find itself gaining an unfavorable reputation in the eyes of its constituencies, the intermediate first previous opposition and rice, affected publics. (Lewicki et. Lanthanides! al., 2003) According to Byrnes (1987), this can in turn affect future relations between the parties as well as setting up a negative sentiment for rice essay, future disputes and negotiations.
Case study: BP Texas Refinery. A recent accident at the BP Texas refinery provides us with an example of the potential ramifications of adopting an unethical stance in life insurance negotiation. According to Laredo Morning Times (2005), despite numerous criticisms by the American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of willfully violating safety rules and regulations, several fines and rice, previous incidents which highlighted the plant’s safety inadequacies, BP maintained its hard line stance on workplace safety negotiations. It was a decision which ultimately cost 15 contract workers their lives. The Texas City explosion was the eighth time this decade a fatal accident had been reported at life insurance a BP-owned plant – and the third fatal accident in Texas City alone. Thus, this recent fatal accident again raises debate over the issue of ‘money versus morality’ and questions whether BP (given its recent poor track record, as described by Olsen (2005)) acted ethically when addressing safety concerns in rice negotiations with their workers. From a financial perspective, the Texas refinery is, according to Klinger (2005), BP’s biggest and the third-largest in the US. It processes 460,000 barrels of crude oil a day, enough to supply 3 per cent of America’s petrol demand. However, from a safety perspective, an allowing cell phones, analysis of industry statistics, news accounts and accident reports shows that, BP leads the U.S. refining industry in deaths over the past decade, with 22 fatalities since 1995 – more than a quarter of those killed in refineries across America.
Furthermore, compared to the company’s major U.S.-based peer, Exxon Mobil Corp, than 10 times as many people have died in BP refineries. (Jordan, 2005) The Texas City plant’s long history of safety problems failed to awaken company’s management into making safety issues their primary focus. Essay! Despite, their valiant attempts in with and anxiety several previous workplace negotiations with BP, the union had been unable secure to better working conditions and rice, reparations to work equipment. In the weeks before the accident at Texas City, the oil giant’s dismal record landed BP on an internal federal watch list of companies ‘indifferent’ to their legal obligations to protect employee safety because of intermediate year papers a fatal explosion in Texas City in September 2004 that killed two pipe fitters and injured a third, when pressurized, superheated water was released from a 12-inch check valve. Rice! (Laredo Morning Times, 2005) The incident resulted in year previous question papers a $109,500 OSHA fine, including seven serious violations and a willful citation for failing to relieve trapped pressure within a pipe. The explosion happened in the ventilator stack that was being started up again following extensive maintenance. It resulted in 15 fatalities, while another 70 people were injured. In response to the incident, BP spokesman Hugh Depland insisted that BP makes safety a priority and that there have been “significant upgrades at Texas City” in recent years: “As a result of the previous incidents we’ve made a number of changes in safety – including increased safety reviews by all members of the leadership team, an enhanced safety team for all employees and creation of a full-time safety audit team.” (Olsen, 2005) According to Laredo Morning Times (2005), the rice problem could have occurred because BP officials might have focused too much on concept, individual worker safety that they missed problems with overall system safety. Whilst safety statistics may have improved because more workers were avoiding minor injuries, lurking problems, such as the outmoded ventilator stack that spewed liquid and essay, gas before igniting, had been neglected. A good company would have investigated all accidents, incidents and near misses and said, “We’ll fix what we find, and we’ll follow it to completion.” (Olsen, 2005) In BP’s case, they found the problem years ago -the ventilator stack – but they never fixed it. The fact that the Texas plant is BP’s biggest refinery, would lead to the assumption that it would have been receiving regular attention, but with such a poor safety record and constant fines, it’s obvious that the management is continuing to sweep the issue under the rug.
The current searing oil prices on the US and global markets may have persuaded the management to life insurance, adopt such an approach, purely in the interests of profitability but that doesn’t make it condonable. The matter is currently under further investigation by the OSHA. The evidence presented by Olsen (2005) and Laredo Morning Times (2005) suggests that the rice repeated causes of accidents and deaths in BP refineries can be linked to a weak unionist movement within the workers at the refinery. Cell Phones Essay! According to Jordan (2005), plant workers were represented by the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE), and, as mentioned above, failed to improve safety conditions for the workers. Statistically, as verified by the evidence that Olsen (2005) and Laredo Morning Times (2005) presented, the number of accidents and deaths at BP refineries continued to climb in recent history, and the union was prepared to take a much bolder stance to finally rectify the situation. A fierce negotiation between BP and its workers, which are mainly contractors, erupted at the Texas BP refinery several weeks before the fatal explosion occurred. Essay! According to Olsen (2005), the workers argued that they were working in an outdated temporary operating unit that had no warnings or evacuation procedures. Furthermore, as verified by Wheelwright (2003), the workers argued that their benefits as independent contractors do not cover compensation for workplace injuries. BP argued with the intention of satisfying the diamond worker’s requests for better occupational health and safety measures, but according to Olsen (2005), seemed unwilling to spend too much time and resources to reinstall safety mechanisms and procedures from bottom up.
The union representing the rice essay contractors working for BP was aware of BP’s poor safety record, and played hardball tactics, delivering a ridiculously harsh opening stance. Furthermore, the union was collaborating and forming allegiance with a third party company that reviews and bond, reports the safety procedures and industrial hazards of a workplace. The union threatened to force an rice essay, inspection of the poorest sections of the diamond plant, and to release the information to the media. The union targeted the very heart of this sensitive issue, using the poor safety record as evidence that BP has, according to Laredo Morning Times (2005) gotten it wrong all along and that it was time to completely overhaul their safety measures. According to the facts that Laredo Morning Times (2005) and Olsen (2005) presented, such as the accusations of rice essay BP willfully violating safety rules and procedures, delaying fixing problems and hiding investigation reports of previous accidents, it can be argued that BP had a habit of finding quick solutions in order to satisfy workers and minimize disruption to the workplace. This was also evident in their negotiation tactics.
Pushed into the corner by the union’s harsh (but true) attacks, BP had no choice but to re-evaluate their stance on intermediate previous question, safety measures. This, according to Lewicki et. Rice Essay! al. (2003) is one of the consequences of the hardball tactic that the for interior union employed. BP resorted to using what Lewicki et. al. Essay! (2003) classifies as unethical forms of bargaining. According to Olsen (2005), there was an initial report informing BP of the dangers of the temporary operating unit. With! However, BP chose to conceal that information from the rice essay union. The negotiators from BP waved off the allegations of hazardous work conditions as exaggerations on the workers’ behalf, and indicated that their reports showed no substantial evidence for common application, any hazardous sites. Finally their closing offer was to achieve an increased safety review by essay all members of the leadership team by life insurance creating an enhanced safety team for all employees and by employing a full-time safety audit team. Unfortunately the rice essay establishment of these teams, according to Olsen (2005) and Laredo Morning Times (2005), was delayed and intermediate question, did not happen before the explosion that killed 15 people occurred.
Conclusions and Recommendations. As discussed in the earlier section on ethics, it can be argued that BP adopted an unethical approach to resolving the essay dispute. They were involved in many of the features of an unethical dissolution, including bluffing, exaggerations and concealment. BP was focused on life insurance, simply achieving the rice essay short-term outcome of minimizing disruption and satisfying the life insurance workers, and by rice this they demonstrated a strong belief in the ends justifying the means. While it can be argued that the coping with negotiators from BP achieved this goal, it can be clearly seen that because of the lack of urgency and essay, value they placed on their workers’ lives, the question papers true outcome of the negotiation was disastrous. A recommendation extends from Byrnes’ (1987) work that was mentioned above. Rice! It involves achieving a positive sentiment when the parties sit down on the negotiation table. Repeated incidents of falsification and lies which cost lives will create an previous question papers, aura of distrust which will lead to a disruption in the work force as well as hardball tactics being employed by the opposing party in future negotiations. Employing one of essay Walton McKersie’s (1965) key systems in negotiations called attitudinal structuring, which involves open and honest communications between parties and the sharing of safety reports and progress, can give the coping with depression and anxiety union confidence that BP will work to fix any hazardous environments in the workplace.
This understanding between the parties will also allow BP to essay, target the aspects of occupational health and intermediate first question papers, safety that the workers truly value (instead of reports by Olsen (2005) indicating that BP was spending all their time just saying “don’t strain your back” and “don’t get dirt in your eyes”). This will help achieve their goal of essay gaining worker support and reducing the disruption to life insurance, the workforce. This recommendation, of course, hinges on rice, BP’s willingness to life insurance, spend the resources to develop these programs. However if BP’s true intentions are to essay, improve their safety record and to decrease the number of accidents and previous question papers, deaths at their plants, establishing an honest and essay, reliable means of communication to the workers is the first step toward correcting their flawed past.
